Thejakartatimes – The Indonesian Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) together with the Indonesian Election Commission (KPU) and the Ministry of Communications and Informatics (Kemenkominfo) signed a memorandum of understanding on the management and monitoring of internet content in governing governor, regent and mayoral elections 2018 on Wednesday ( 31/1/2018).
The signing of the memorandum of understanding of action was carried out by the Chairman of Bawaslu Abhan, KPU Chairman Arief Budiman, and the Minister of Communication and Informatics Rudiantara.
In his speech, Abhan said, Pilkada is actually a channel for people to choose leaders and participate in politics. Pilkada is one way of strengthening democracy.
“But elections will be overwhelmed by the widespread use of social media containing hoaks and negative content,” Abhan said.
Furthermore Abhan said, of the 17 provinces that will hold elections this year, as many as 12 provinces are high in terms of the use of social media (medsos).
On the other hand, the issue of identity politics is also prevalent even at the district / city level.
Therefore, continued Abhan, the memorandum of understanding of this action is very important to protect voters’ rights in obtaining the correct and balanced information.
“The memorandum of understanding of the action is in line with the Law and Bawaslu spirit in increasing public participation in electoral supervision,” Abhan continued.
On the occasion, Arief said Indonesian people have been using social media for quite some time. The memorandum of understanding of this action is done as a concrete step from the election organizers to make internet use in democracy better.
